The dry run worked because it didn't actually attempt to transfer the files, and so it didn't encounter the permission problem.
If you're using sudo rsync Incidentally, you'll get a far more efficient transfer if you enable the rsync service on the Synology NAS, and use that instead of transferring across NFS. For starters, be aware that because you're using rsync to copy from one part of the local host's filesystem to another part of what looks like the local host's filesystem, it will not use its differential algorithm to transfer only changes to files' contents.
Instead, it will look at file size and modification time and if they differ it will copy the file in its entirety. Enabling the Synology NAS rsync service or rsync over ssh if you can will allow the tool to run in client-server mode, where it can check and transfer only changes to files.

Which directories have you confirmed you can write to? Sorry if i sound confusing. I have tried doing a simple rsync over ssh to my synology nas and that seemed to work just fine.

I'm working on a backup system over NFS, and I want to ensure as much as I can that the files are really written to the disk. Currently, when doing backups on my local hard disk, I copy everything into a temporary folder, do a sync to flush the caches, rename the temporary folder to the final name, and do another sync.
That way, if system hangs during backup, or there's a power failure, the half-made backup will be in an easily-identified folder and can be deleted and started again when the system boots again.
Is it possible to do this over NFS? Do a "remote sync " call to ensure that the server has flushed the cache to disk? When you mount your drive over NFS you can tell it to sync by adding 'sync' as one of the options.
I believe by default it does this. Therefore there is no need to worry about doing a sync call as it is already happening for you. When the server responds saying the data has been written to disk you can assure that is has. Mount option sync did not help, and might have had performance penalties also. Learn more.

It only takes a minute to sign up. I have a situation where four Apache servers mount the same directory via NFS, and when one server make a change to a file, it takes about 5 - 10 seconds for the other servers to see that change.
If a second change is made to that file within this window, it may overwrite the first change. On the servermake sure your filesystem is exported with the sync option, and not async. With synchronous writes, the client will flush to disk when the file is closed.
There may be a performance hit that way, but if you're doing writes to an NFS filesystem, you definitely want sync set. At this point, the unauthorized machine is the system permitted to mount the NFS share, since no username or password information is exchanged to provide additional security for the NFS mount. Wildcards should be used sparingly when granting host access to an NFS share. The scope of the wildcard may encompass systems that you may not know exist and should not be allowed to mount the filesystem. File Permissions. Once the NFS filesystem is mounted read-write by a remote host, protection for each shared file involves its permissions, and its user and group ID ownership.
If two users that share the same user ID value mount the same NFS filesystem, they will be able to modify each others files. Additionally, anyone logged in as root on the client system can use the su command to become a user who could access particular files via the NFS share.
The default behavior when exporting a filesystem via NFS is to use root squashing. This sets the user ID of anyone utilizing the NFS share as the root user on their local machine to a value of the server's nobody account. You should never turn off root squashing unless multiple users with root access to your server does not bother you.
